It figures to be quite a spicy semifinal line-up at the Rome Masters. While the favorites are long gone, the last four offer intrigue and interest.

Today, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev rounded out the final four.

Playing some of his best clay tennis in years, Medvedev reached his second clay Masters semifinals rolling past German qualifier Yannick Hanfmann 6-2, 6-2.

“I said before the tournament I was feeling really great in practice,” said Medvedev who reached the 2019 Monte Carlo semifinals. “It is always a danger to say this if you lose the first round and you think, ‘Why did I say this’. But I am feeling great. The transition from Grand Stand to center court was not easy. He was struggling more than me and I am happy with the win and being in the semis.”

Medvedev, who will return to to No. 2 with a title, finished with eight aces, had seven doubles and was 6 of 10 on break chances.

In the evening, Tsitsipas got over on rival Borna Coric 6-4, 6-4. The Greek blew a late second second break lead only to win the last two games of the match to even his series with the Croat 3-3. Tsitsipas lost just three total points on first serve. He hasn’t dropped a set yet this week.

“This is clay court tennis, things escalated quite quickly. And there was a turning point, but accompanied by my great shotmaking, at the very important moments, I was able to retrieve that and get back and hold,” Tsitsipas said. “A great service game in the very last game, serving excellently and just feeling the energy point by point.”

While Holger Rune and Casper Ruud have had issues in the past, so too have Tsitsipas and Medvedev. It should be quite a semifinal showcase on Saturday in Rome.

Medvedev has won seven of 11 from Tsitsipas.

“I feel good on court, regardless if it’s a night session or a day session and I really hope to bring the best out of me against him. I feel like he’s playing better than the years before,” said Tsitsipas.
