Packers rumors: Green Bay open to Aaron Rodgers return under 1 condition

After a report dropped that the Green Bay Packers were “done with” Aaron Rodgers, an NFL insider said that the team is actually open to a return, but under one condition.

The Green Bay Packers are currently awaiting to find out what their quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, wants to do ahead of the 2023 league year. At the end of the season, Rodgers hinted that it could be his final time with the Packers. That then opened up the question as to whether he wants to remain with the team, play for another organization, or retire.

Ahead of Rodgers’ entrance into his “darkness retreat,” longtime Packers reporter Bob McGinn said during an appearance on the “Go Long Pod” that the team was “disgusted” by Rodgers and were “ready to move on from him.” Those were certainly some eye-opening words regarding Rodgers’ future in Green Bay.

During an appearance on “The Rich Eisen Show” this past Tuesday, NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero said that the Packers are actually open to a Rodgers return for next season. However, Pelissero stresses that the team would be willing to do so if Rodgers is “fully bought in.”

NFL insider says Packers are open to Aaron Rodgers return

“If he wants to return to Green Bay and as long as he’s fully bought in, the Packers want him back,” Pelissero said, h/t the New York Post. “They had good conversations after the season.”

That is certainly promising news for those in Green Bay who want Rodgers to continue to don a green and yellow uniform. But, this is all on Rodgers’ schedule. Specifically, when he wants to make his decision and when he wants to announce his intent. Let’s not forget the tirade he went on during his weekly appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” regarding when he was entering his “darkness retreat,” stressing that only a close circle of those he trusts know what he’s doing.

If Rodgers does decide he wants to play for a different NFL team next season, that would then allow the Packers to pivot to the quarterback they traded up to get in the first-round of the 2020 NFL Draft, and that is Jordan Love. The 24-year-old quarterback is entering his fourth year in the league, and he showed promise this past season. Love filled in for Rodgers in Week 12 against the Philadelphia Eagles, where he completed 6-of-9 pass attempts or 113 yards and a touchdown.

It’s not just the Packers who are waiting for Rodgers to make up his mind. The New York Jets are heavily linked to him, and have been very open in their intent to pursue him this offseason if he were to request a trade out of Green Bay.

As for the report that the Packers were done with Rodgers, Pelissero says otherwise and that the team is open to a return for the 2023 season, but if the quarterback is bought in.
