Black Friday is a modern "shopping holiday" that was created fairly recently. The term was coined in the 1950s when office managers would refer to the day after Thanksgiving as "Black Friday." They would do so because their employees, in an effort to stay home with their families after Thanksgiving, would call in sick.
That faux pandemic resulted in many offices embracing the Friday as part of the long weekend. The city of Philadelphia also used the term to describe the terrible traffic jams that would occur on the day after Thanksgiving. And thus, Black Friday was born.
But, really, if you hate crowds...you should just avoid going to any store the day after Thanksgiving (no matter what Black Friday sales they are advertising).
Aren't you glad you stayed home?
Yes. She just stole from a child...and she is the worst human ever.
