The Miss America pageant is usually just a vapid beauty contest during which women attempt to prove their self-worth for huge audiences by standing in bikinis. Over the years, the show has gotten more progressive, but you can't ignore the fact that it is essentially a giant beauty competition. The contestants are judged primarily on their good looks, since very little of the show is dedicated to the many talents of these women.
While most contestants sing, dance, or play an instrument, Kelley Johnson -- also known as Miss Colorado -- took some time to talk about the importance of nursing. Her speech is moving, enthralling, and important.
I think that every Miss America contestant should be given the opportunity to share things like this, and they should all be held to standards that are based on more than physical beauty. Kudos to Kelley Johnson for enlightening us all about some of the most dedicated, diligent people in the workforce.
